Redsn0w 0.9.6b1 : iOS 4.1/4.0 Jailbreak for iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G

Click the image to open in full size.

The Dev-Team has just released a fresh beta version of redsn0w, version 0.9.6b1, which allows users to jailbreak the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G on iOS 4.1 or 4.0.

The tool uses the same pwnage2 DFU-mode exploit that we’ve all been using with redsn0w since the 2.x days. There is nothing new for Apple to patch from this update, it's simply still compatible.

For those that are getting excited, settle down: this does not include the SHAtter exploit that has been on everyones mind lately.

Quote:
IF YOU USE THE ULTRASN0W UNLOCK, PLEASE WAIT FOR PWNAGETOOL TO SUPPORT 4.1. DO NOT USE REDSN0W. That’s because to use redsn0w at 4.1, you need to already have updated to official 4.1 from Apple. If you do that, you lose the ultrasn0w unlock (possible forever).
Currently redsn0w 0.9.6b1 is only available for Mac OSX, but a little birdie tells me that iH8sn0w may have the same thing up his sleeve for the same situation, but for Windows users.

Quote:
Note: if you have an “MC” model of the ipt2g, your jailbreak will be tethered…sorry! (Consider rolling back to a FW supported by jailbreakme.com or spiritjb.com)

iOS 4.1 Jailbreak for iPhone 3GS (New Bootrom) with Sn0wbreeze 2.0 Releasing on Wednesday. Here is What You Need to Know

iH8sn0w’s Sn0wbreeze 2.0 will drop on Wednesday, 23rd September 2010. For those of you who don’t know, Sn0wbreeze for Windows works like PwnageTool for Mac which helps you in creating custom firmware files so that you can upgrade to new firmware without upgrading your baseband. This allows you to use the existing version of Ultrasn0w for unlocking the phone so that you can use it with any carrier you like.
Spirit2Pwn (2)
However it is to be noted that Sn0wbreeze 2.0 WILL NOT jailbreak iPhone 4, iPad and iPod touch 4G. The devices which it will support are:
  • iPhone 2G
  • iPhone 3G
  • iPhone 3GS (old bootrom) – Must be already jailbroken. (If you are jailbroken using Spirit or JailbreakMe, use Spirit2Pwn from http://repo.woowiz.net)
  • iPhone 3GS (new bootrom) – Must be currently jailbroken on 3.1.2.
  • iPod Touch 1G
  • iPod Touch 2G (Non-MC Model)
  • iPod Touch 2G (MC Model) – Must be currently jailbroken on 3.1.2.
  • iPod Touch 3G – Must be currently jailbroken on 3.1.2.
We will of course be back with complete How-to guides on jailbreaking iPhone and iPod touch using Sn0wbreeze 2.0 for Windows once it is out this Wednesday. Stay tuned!

Apple Reportedly Seeking Facial Recognition Technology

Click the image to open in full size.
There are reports that Apple may have purchased a Sweden-based tech firm that specializes in facial recognition technologies and similar applications that make it possible for gadgets and gizmos to identify users via their unique facial characteristics. If you're wondering if this could be the first step toward subsequent iPhones utilizing "facial recognition" as a security component, you are not alone.

With talk that next year's iPhone 5 will be all about speed and security (speed from AT&T's 4G network and a host of beefed up, cutting edge security features) it wouldn't be too difficult to imagine the powers-that-be in Cupertino investing heavily in the technology that this company - called "Polar Rose" (according to Google translation) - knows inside and out. Apple Insider reports that Polar Rose is a "small company with less than 20 employees." And its technology came as the result of research conducted in "two universities" in southern Sweden.

Although this report marks the first talk of its kind regarding the acquisition of a company that specializes in facial recognition, Apple has long been rumored to want similar technology in its full range of iDevices. Some will recall that prior to the iPad's release, there were reports from the likes of the Wall Street Journal that Apple's then-mythical tablet would be a device that would be shared by multiple family members -- "and it might even recognize their faces."

From reports to patent applications, there's no doubt that Apple is interested in facial recognition technology. And if Polar Rose doesn't prove the vehicle to delver the technology, it's a safe bet that Apple will find another way - or another source - to get or create what the company seems to have an unrelenting fascination with.

iOS 4.2 Jailbroken on iPhone 3GS with Sn0wbreeze [Video]

iOS 4.2 has already been jailbroken for old bootrom devices with PwnageTool for Macs! And now we have good news for our PC-toting readers: it is coming real soon to Windows with Sn0wbreeze!
pwned
So I just jailbroke by 3GS (Old bootrom) on 4.2 and Cydia/Icy/Rock wont work… Icy just wont update but launches. I haz ssh though. :)
While Sn0wbreeze dev iH8sn0w mentioned that his iOS 4.2 iPhone 3GS is jailbroken, he also said jailbreak App Stores Cydia, Icy and Rock (which recently merged with Cydia) aren’t really working for now. They will, hopefully and most probably, work in the future though.
DinoD7 also posted this video which shows an iPhone 3GS (old bootromjailbroken with Sn0wbreeze. This is all a sign of good things to come!

Jailbreak iOS 4.2 on iPhone 3GS with PwnageTool – Complete How to Guide

PwnageTool Bundle for iOS 4.2 Beta on iPhone 3GS (old bootrom) has been released. You can use this bundle to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS on iOS 4.2 while preserving your older basebandso that you can unlock it “later” (more on this below) using Ultrasn0w. The best thing about this bundle is that it supports hacktivation, but unfortunately, Cydia is currently not compatible with iOS 4.2. You will have to use SSH (OpenSSH) to copy or install any files manually on your iPhone.
iOS 4.2 Jailbreak
Again, this bundle is meant for iPhone 3GS with old bootrom only. Those of you who are with new bootrom will have to wait for the upcoming GreenPoison tool which should be released soon.
The following step by step guide will help you guide on how to patch the existing version ofPwnageTool so that it can jailbreak iOS 4.2 Beta on iPhone 3GS.
Warning / Note: Perform the following instructions at your own risk only. I am not responsible if you end up bricking or locking your phone. Only proceed if you are an advanced user, and know what you are doing. Otherwise, it is better for you to stay away from this and wait for the official tools for iOS 4.2 jailbreak.
Supported Device(s):
iPhone 3GS ONLY, with older bootrom which has at least been jailbroken once with either redsn0w, PwnageTool, Blackra1n or Sn0wbreeze. If your phone is one of those with newer bootrom, and has only been jailbroken with Spirit or JailbreakMe, then this is not for you. You will end up getting 1600/1604 error when restoring the custom cooked firmware via iTunes. Also since Cydia is broken on iOS 4.2, make sure you install OpenSSH from here:http://apt.telesphoreo.org/cydia/debs/openssl_0.9.8k-9_iphoneos-arm.deb and herehttp://apt.telesphoreo.org/cydia/debs/openssh_5.2p1-8_iphoneos-arm.deb/ so that you can copy and install stuff without Cydia.

How to Downgrade iOS 4.2 to 4.1 / 4.0.2 / 4.0.1 on iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G and iPad

iOS 4.2 was released earlier today. Just like iOS 4.1 and iOS 4.0.2, the new iOS 4.2 at the moment is not jailbreakable. It also contains new baseband for all iOS devices which currently makes it impossible to unlock using existing version of Ultrasn0w. So if you rely on a jailbreak and unlock, stay away from this new firmware until new jailbreak and unlock tools are available for download.
iOS 4.2
If you upgraded to iOS 4.2 and now want to downgrade back to iOS 4.1 / 4.0.2 or 4.0.1, follow the instructions posted to downgrade iOS 4.2 on iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G, iPod touch and iPad to iOS 4.0.x. This guide will only work if you have SHSH blobs saved for the respective firmware you downgrading to.

FaceTime Coming to Mac & PC

Click the image to open in full size.

Feel like you've been missing out on FaceTime because you don't have a new iPhone 4 or iPod Touch 4G? Well fear not, as word is coming down the pipleline that Apple plans on bringing FaceTime to both the Mac and Windows operating systems.

Mac4Ever rumors that Apple’s FaceTime video calling will be headed to Mac OS X in the form of an iChat update, but interestingly enough, it will also be coming to Windows. While it is unsure what form FaceTime will take in Windows, it is understood that FaceTime is built on open standards and has been released as an open standard, which means we could see it completely integrated into existing services like Skype, Windows Live Messenger, or even built right inside of iTunes.

This would be a very smart move on Apple's part, thus making FaceTime a more universal concept that we could see spread like a virus. Doing this makes everyone connected with Apple's technology, iDevice or no iDevice. Back in 2009, Mac4Ever predicted well in advance, Apple's October 2009 iMac refresh, including the addition of an SD card slot and quad-core processor, however even through all of this, we will have to wait for official news from Apple.

What are your thoughts on this rumor? I personally would love to see an iChat for Windows get released.

SHAtter Exploit will Jailbreak All Existing iOS Devices Forever !

We previously broke the news to our respected readers of a low-level bootrom exploit which would enable jailbreaking on iOS 4.1 and beyond with all versions of the iPod touch, iPhoneand of course, iPad! This exploit was special in a way because Apple will not be able to patch the exploit with a software update, instead it will require Apple to release entirely revisedhardware for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch and we all know that we are at least 6 months away from any hardware revisions.
iPhone 4 Jailbreak and Unlock for Life
Word around the Twittersphere is that the exploit named SHAtter is in the bootrom section, together with Pwnage 2.0 and 24kpwn which will make all existing devices, including the newiPhone 4 and iPod touch 4G pwned for life! It is obviously not publicly available yet, both theChronic Dev Team and the iPhone Dev Team hackers are hard at work right now trying to get everything ready for full release. Unfortunately though, this jailbreak is reportedly said to be tethered i.e. you will be required to connect your iOS device to your computer on every reboot unlike how untethered userland jailbreak like JailbreakMe worked. iPhone hacker posixninjahas confirmed that Geohot also had this exploit dubbed at that time as “pwned4life” beforeleaving the jailbreak scene.
We will of course let you know whenever these new jailbreak and unlock tools for iOS 4.1 are available for download. Stay tuned!

How to Jailbreak iPhone 3GS on iOS 4.1 with PwnageTool [Guide]

The unofficial version of PwnageTool for iOS 4.1 on iPhone 3GS has been released. It can jailbreak iPhone 3GS (with old bootrom only) using iOS 4.1 custom firmware. For those of you who don’t know, PwnageTool for Mac enables iPhone users to upgrade to the new firmware without upgrading the baseband, hence making it possible to jailbreak and unlock the phone using the Ultrasn0w software. This version of PwnageTool unfortunately doesn’t support hacktivation, so you will have to either use officially supported SIM, or the phonebook SIM card method to activate the phone before unlocking it with Ultrasn0w.

How to Unlock iPhone 3GS on iOS 4.1 with Ultrasn0w [Guide]

The newly released iOS 4.1 for iPhone 4, 3GS, and 3G features new baseband which is currently not unlockable using the current version of ultrasn0w. But if you upgrade (while preserving baseband) and then jailbreak iPhone 3GS on iOS 4.1 using PwnageTool method, you can unlock your phone (iPhone 3GS) using the existing version of ultrasn0w. Also, if you upgrade your iPhone 4 (while preserving baseband) on iOS 4.1 using the method, you will be able to unlock your phone (iPhone 4) as soon as the new jailbreak tool is available for download.
So technically, you can currently unlock any jailbroken iPhone 3GS on iOS 4.1 as long as it has old bootrom using the steps posted below.

You Can Now Set a Home Page in Mobile Safari on Your Jailbroken iPhone and iPad

A new useful add-on which goes by the name of “Home Page in Safari” has been released on Cydia which allows jailbroken iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users to set their favorite website as home page in Mobile Safari browser. This could specially come in handy on the larger, more spacious screen of iPad !
Home Page in Safari
Allows you to set a home page in Mobile Safari by simply tapping the “+” button while visiting the website of your chouce, then tapping the “Set as Home”.
There are no homescreen icons or settings for this add-on
You will of course need to have a jailbroken iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to install it. Follow our step by step guide posted here to jailbreak your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with JailbreakMe if you haven’t already.
"Home Page in Safari” is available on Cydia on BigBoss repository for $0.99.

iOS 4.1 Out Today: "It's a Trap!"

The Dev-Team blog posted a warning advising unlockers not to install iOS 4.1, amid a flurry of reports indicating that the update will be available starting later today. Apple's UK site had posted a notice over the weekend - since changed to read "Coming soon" - that 4.1 would be "available on 8 September," and the Spanish site had a similar announcement. Regardless of the specific date, though, the Dev-Team is advising in the strongest terms against an upgrade. “Today you’ll likely start seeing iTunes innocently offer you a new version of iOS…version 4.1," the Dev-Team Blog says. Under a video clip from Return of the Jedi, the post warns "Don’t accept it…it’s a trap!”

The team's warning is particularly directed at new iOS device owners, who may not have any experience with the jailbreak cat-and-mouse game. "Not everybody knows that accepting new iOS updates is the surest way to lose your jailbreak and/or unlock,” as the post says. In particular, the expected baseband update will break carrier unlocks: "while those of you who have Cydia or TinyUmbrella backups of your FW hashes will always be able to get back to 4.0.1 if you make this mistake, this doesn’t hold for unlockers… there’s currently no known way to revert your baseband — if you update your baseband you’ll lose the ultrasn0w unlock, possible [sic] forever.” However, due to a flaw in very early bootloaders, “a tiny number of iPhone 3G owners” will be able to revert their basebands… and you know who you are.

After the 4.0.2 update was released, the Dev-team posted an announcement that they wouldn't work on a jailbreak for tactical reasons, explaining that "if the cat & mouse game escalates too quickly, especially during beta FW periods, nobody but Apple benefits." As is usually the case, though, some users are anxious to have a jailbreak as soon as the new firmware is available. One user sent @comex a tweet asking about a "next week userland jailbreak," to which the Dev-Team hacker replied "there's no such thing." In reply to another tweet, @comex said "next jb might not come from me." This touched off a huge amount of commentary on blogs, leading @cdevwill to suggest with some exasperation that users "stop… speculating about the next jailbreak and just wait." Then, @p0sixninja shot back a sarcastic tweet saying "what do you mean? We all know the next JB will be from h0tb33fdev," which started another whole round of "CONFIRMED!" posts. To calm people down, @p0sixninja later had toexplain that "h0tb33fdev is a fake fake group to make fun of all the other fake groups out there."

So, we're passing on the advice to just hang on and wait patiently (and not spam the Dev-Team members with tweets asking when the jailbreak will be available; we'll know as soon as it is) and, of course, making sure your SHSH blobs are backed up. Users are already reporting a slowdown on Cydia as 4.1 approaches.

pple Relaxes iOS App Store Restrictions, Will Allow Third Party Development Tools

Announced just today, and picked up first by Gizmodo, Apple will be relaxing all restrictions on the development tools used to create iOS apps. Also in a very surprising move, the company at One Infinite Loop, CA has also published App Store Review Guidelines for developers.
iOS Development(image via Cristiano Betta)
Back in April, Apple disallowed all developers from using cross platform tools like Flash. The updated license forced devs to use Apple’s Objective C-based tools and there was no changing that, as Steve Jobs sternly replied to in an email.
But now, Apple has changed their decision:
We are continually trying to make the App Store even better. We have listened to our developers and taken much of their feedback to heart. Based on their input, today we are making some important changes to our iOS DeveloperProgram license in sections 3.3.1, 3.3.2 and 3.3.9 to relax some restrictions we put in place earlier this year.
In particular, we are relaxing all restrictions on the development tools used to create iOS apps, as long as the resulting apps do not download any code. This should give developers the flexibility they want, while preserving the securitywe need.
So yes, cross platform tools like Adobe’s Flash, Unreal Game’s Unreal Engine, Unity etc are now allowed for devs to use to make apps for the App Store. And they are allowed so long as the apps they make do not download any code from the user’s iOS device.
Now onto the second bit; Apple has also published App Store Review Guidelines to help developers understand how their applications are reviewed and then allowed or rejected byApple.
In addition, for the first time we are publishing the App Store Review Guidelines to help developers understand how we review submitted apps. We hope it will make us more transparent and help our developers create even more successful apps for the App Store.
Pornographic applications are still not allowed. So if you are continually horny and prefer porn on the small screen, try Google Android. Smile with tongue out
This means that developers of perfectly legal apps like GrooveShark will no longer feel that their app was unjustly reviewed.
Developers can now finally develop an application while keeping the Review Guidelines in mind and won’t face feelings of absolute cluelessness when they find that their app has been rejected.
Wrapping things up, Jesus Diaz of Gizmodo writes:
As for censorship, we have yet to see how the new public guidelines will affect the process. My fear is that, if the "law" is open to interpretation, we will keep seeing the same mistakes.
Will the new rules make the App Store a more open place? Only time will tell!
