iPhone 3G Baseband Downgrade!

Good news folks.  pH, BigBoss, and EvilPenguin have created a tool to downgrade your baseband from 02.30.03 to 02.28.00.  What does this mean for you?  Well, if you upgraded (on purpose or accidentally) to 2.2.1 - then you have 2.30.03, which is not supported by yellowsn0w.
The only downside to this:  the iPhone 3G has two bootloaders:  5.8 and 5.9.  According to http://thebigboss.org, “if your iPhone was manufactured before September (2008), you are 5.8. Otherwise, you are 5.9 (that can’t be downgraded)”.
A quick and easy way to tell when your phone was manufactured is by looking at the 11 digit serial number located on the lower back of the phone.  The first two digits are the factory ID (where it came from), and the next three are date information.  The rest of the numbers are irrelevant for our purposes of downgrading
It’s digits 3-4-5 of your 11-digit serial number. The first two are the factory ID of which it was made in, and the next three are date info. I don’t know what the rest of the numbers are for.
Example:  xx832xxxxxx.  The 8 represents the year 2008.  This is the first good sign for your iPhone 3G.  The next two numbers is the week it was created.
From what I’ve come up with - if you have lower than week 36, you should be okay.  Week 36 is the end of September.  Can we get some comments to confirm this?
So to install this beautiful piece of work, you can find it on TheBigBoss repository on Cydia.  It’s called “3GBBD” (3G Baseband Downgrader).  Just download and click go - and you should be on your way!

These notes are DIRECTLY from the http://thebigboss.org post:
WARNING: This tool is NOT a toy. Just use it if you can’t use Yellowsn0w on your 2.2.1 iPhone 3G. Otherwise, DO NOT INSTALL IT JUST TO TEST! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
Edit: if you have bootloader 5.9, this should not cause any harm. It should simply fail. You will then have to reboot your iPhone and should be back up to where you were before running the tool.
Big thanks to pH, EvilPenguin, and BigBoss http://thebigboss.org for this wonderful tool!

iOS 4.1 05.14.01_BL01 Baseband is Not Unlockable. Avoid this Update If You Want the Unlock

The newly released iOS 4.1 Beta 2 features new baseband for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G which makes these mentioned phones locked on this new firmware. The guy who found the exploit used in Ultrasn0w 0.93 has confirmed that this new baseband patches the exploit and therefore it is highly recommended to stay away from thisfirmware for now if you rely on an carrier unlock.

confirmed , the exploit used for ultrasn0w0.93 has been completely dismissed from 05.14.01 :( , 3g & 3gs unlockers NEVER go past 4.0.1
You have been warned ! Don’t go past iOS 4.0.1 if you want your unlock!

Comex: iPhone 4, iOS 4.x Jailbreak is “Pretty Close to Done”

|Listening to an all-star podcast interview which involved iPhone devs like Comex, Planetbeing, Chpwn and iH8sn0w who are working on jailbreak and unlock scene, there was this question which the hosts asked the devs about when is the iPhone 4 and iOS 4.x jailbreak is expected to be out. While no specific release date was given, they did said that jailbreak is “pretty close to done”. They are now waiting for Saurik (creator of Cydia) to fix couple of loose ends before it is released. iPhone 4 unlock on the other hand is 100 percent done and is waiting for jailbreak to be released.
Jailbreaking iPhone
The exact answers were..
Question: When is the iPhone 4 Jailbreak and Unlock is going to be released?
Comex: You will have to ask Saurik if he’s done with that bootstrap yet. Like I hate to say this because people will be complaining, but it is pretty close to done.
PlanetBeing: Unlock is done. Just waiting for the jailbreak to be released.
Chpwn: The jailbreak definitely needs a lot of testing before it is released, to make sure it works on everybody’s phone, and that there are no issues like Spirit had where it deleted all of your photos in the first few days of the release.
So there you go.. it is nearly finished, and hopefully will be released very soon. You can listen to the whole interview on iTunes here, or just skip to 43:45 to hear the part where this question was asked.

iPhone 2G 3G FIX: This Accessory is not made to work with iPhone

There are two primary symptoms of a faulty dock connector:
1. The external speakers do not click or play music from iPod, but they do make noise when the phone rings.
2. At random times a notice comes up that says, “This accessory is not made to work with iPhone Charging is not supported with this accessory. Would you like to turn on Airplane Mode to reduce audio interference? You will not be able to make or receive calls.”

ERROR 3194 SOLUTION / FIX:-

Apple recently released the iOS4 firmware update for the iPhone 3G, 3GS and iPod Touch users. Users updated to the new firmware anticipating new features and improved performance. Nevertheless, for some of them the opposite occurred, especially for iPhone 3G owners. Most of the iPhone 3G users are reporting very slow performance and applications crashing. The main cause of this problem is the slow processor and the low amount of RAM in the iPhone 3G.

ios4 logo thumb Fix Error 3194 For Restore 3gs 3.1.3 SOLUTION HERE
Now there is no official way to downgrade to OS 3.1.3 from iOS4, but there is always an unofficial way. Here are the steps to downgrade from iOS4 to OS 3.1.3 –:
  • 1) First navigate to “c:windowssystem32driversetc” and open the ‘hosts’ file in notepad. To do so, right click on the file and select Open With->Notepad. At the end of the document, add this string 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com .
  • 2) Now connect your iPhone to iTunes in recovery mode. To do so, first switch off your device. Then press the Home button on your handset and connect the USB cable. As soon as you connect the USB cable, the device will boot up and a “Connect To iTunes” screen will be displayed. Users can now stop pressing the Home button.
  • 3) Fire up iTunes now. You will see your iPhone/iPod Touch detected in recovery mode. Now, whilst pressing the Shift key for Windows users or Alt key on the Mac platform, click on the Restore option.
  • Now just select the original OS 3.1.3 and voila, you are done. Now you can again enjoy OS 3.1.3 on your iTouch device.

Blacksn0w Reboot Loop / No WiFi Signal / Reset Network Settings / Unlock

ISSUE:
iPhone 3G/S gets stuck on a boot loop where the phone boots, shows the Apple logo (or GeoHot's face, depending on where you get the error), gives the Apple spinner, sits, then reboots, and repeats the process over and over. Alternately, the iPhone 3G/S gets stuck on a boot loop, shows the Apple Logo (or Geohot's face), gives the Apple spinner, and sits. This usually occurs on iPhone 3GS models with the latest bootrom, after a user has told the device to "Reset Network Settings" after WiFi connectivity has been lost. The problem can also occur if after the iPhone soft reboots after you have lost WiFi connectivity, for example, after an application install such as MobileSubstrate / SBSettings.

CAUSE:
This is caused by a race condition that exists on the iPhone 3G/S related to the WiFi implementation and is UNRELATED to the jailbreak and unlock itself -- this occurs on both jailbroken and unjailbroken phones as well as carrier-locked and software-unlocked phones. Admittedly, it occurs more with soft-unlocked devices, but this is because the unlock exacerbates the existing problem with the race condition -- not because the unlock is unstable or potentially dangerous (it's not!). Quite the contrary, the most updated unlock actually resolves the race condition -- which Apple's own software still has yet to resolve. That said, this issue CAN be fixed in several methods and the newest version of blacksn0w (RC2 Final) contains a fix that solves this problem permanently.

UPDATE: Preferred FIX #1: (This only applies if you: ARE using an iPhone 3GS, DO NOT have a 3.1.2 SHSH on file, HAVE NOT previously upgraded to 3.1.3, and HAVE a legitimate SIM to activate with)1) Follow the steps as documented by the dev team here: http://wikee.iphwn.org/howto:removellb
2) FOLLOW THE STEPS VERY, VERY CAREFULLY. Understand that this is a LAST DITCH effort -- if you do this wrong, go too quickly, don't follow instructions, or ignore a warning, YOU WILL make the situation worse.
3) This process completes with your phone being restored to 3.1.3 without the baseband being updated.
4) Use the latest Spirit to jailbreak.
5) Use Blacksn0w RC2 to unlock.

FIX #2: (Not as reliable as FIX #1, but has less prerequisites and doesn't require re-flashing)
1) Download the latest version of blackra1n.
2) Plug the phone into your iPhone USB connector, plugged into a Windows machine running iTunes and blackra1n.
3) The phone will show as connected but will NOT charge. THIS IS EXPECTED BEHAVIOR.
4) Keep blackra1n open and keep the phone plugged in, and go do something for 8 to 12 to 16 hours. This is a VERY IMPORTANT STEP.
5) When you come back to your phone/PC, your phone should be at the home screen and charged.
6) If you have WiFi when your phone reboots, open Cydia, add the devteam's source (cydia.pushfix.info) and update Blacksn0w to RC2.

IF YOU HAVE NO WIFI AFTER COMPLETING FIX 2:
1) Uninstall blacksn0w (either remove the package from Cydia, or remove /usr/lib/blacksn0w.dylib and re-add the original com.apple.CommCenter.plist)
2) Reboot your phone.
3) You should now have WiFi back.
4) Add the Blacksn0w repository (cydia.pushfix.info) and install Blacksn0w RC2
5) Reboot your phone

WHAT IS REALLY HAPPENING:
When the phone gets stuck in the reboot loop, it is unable to charge via the USB connector plugged into the PC because the iPhone doesn't get that far in the boot process before the race condition exhibits. The device gets far enough to mount the root filesystem and to provide filesystem access over USB, however. When you leave it plugged in and walk away, what you're really doing is allowing the iPhone to completely discharge its battery. When it does this, it will power off. Once it has powered off, it will begin charging via the USB cable. Once it has sufficient charge to power on, it will power on. During the power-on process, blackra1n will see the iPhone and will kickstart it.

This should return your phone to 100% working (and unlocked!) status.

If anyone has any additions or corrections, post them in the comments below and I'll keep this updated.

iPhone TIPS: Fix "Cannot Connect to YouTube" iPhone 3G and OS 3.0

my YouTube App was not working after the upgrade of my iPhone 3G to OS3 plus jailbreaking an Unlocking it with Redsn0w. Good news, I have a fix that worked for me and it simple like 1,2,3. The main problem was that my system time was wrong. It is obviously necessary to have a correct system time on your iPhone 3G before the YouTube servers are willing to accept your connections. Here is what helped me fixing the "Cannot Connect to YouTube" issue. I said it was simple because you need to set the iPhone clock to the correct current time ,date and year.
1. Tap settings
2. Tap General
3. In General scroll down to the bottom
4. Tap Date & Time
5. In Date & Time, tap Set Date & Time
6. Tap the , button
7. Set the correct month day year via the big dial below
8. Tap the button
9. Set the correct current time
10. done.
In my situation the YouTube app started to work straight away. I also retested it by setting the iPhone clock back to a wrong date in 2001, and I can confirm that YouTube doesn't work anymore by complaining with the
"Cannot Connect to YouTube"

I hope this fix will fix your YouTube app as well. Leave a comment here if this guide cannot fix you problem

iOS 4.1 Beta 2 is Jailbreakable Using Redsn0w

The newly released iOS 4.1 Beta 2 is jailbreakable using the existing version 0.9.5b5 of Redsn0w. However this Redsn0w jailbreak is supported on iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G only. Here is the update on this from the iPhone Dev-Team blog:
Redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5
If you’ve updated to 4.1beta2 on iPhone3G or iPod2G(non-MC), you can use this redsn0w from June to jailbreak. Just point it at the 4.0 IPSW (the public one, not the developer GM one).
(Yes – point it at the 4.0 IPSW even though you’re at 4.1beta2).
Don’t do this if you need the ultrasn0w carrier unlock!!
Note 1: This won’t hacktivate your iPhone3G – but for those with legit access to the 4.1beta2 this shouldn’t matter. Please don’t pirate Applesoftware
Note 2: If you’re at 4.1beta2 you’ll probably experience network problems after jailbreaking. Until a new version of redsn0w is released, you may need to rely on afc2 access (such as FunBox-like file browser programs) to manipulate your filesystem.
Note 3: This is recommended only for power users who can deal with the problems that will pop up as the JB apps fall further behind the beta firmwares.
So all you need is the latest iOS 4.1 Beta 2 firmware for iPhone 3G or iPod touch 2G (non-MC Models) and you can jailbreak it using Redsn0w on Windows and Mac. Again, this is strictly for iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G (non-MC models) only. If your iPhone 3G relies on an unlock, you MUST STAY AWAY from iOS 4.1 for now.
Full set of instructions on how to to jailbreak iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G on iOS 4.1 using Redsn0w 0.9.5 can be found here. Please read all the instructions carefully beforeupgrading and jailbreaking your phone on iOS 4.1.
iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 3G and 2G (MC models) users will have to wait for the new all iOS device jailbreak by Comex, which is currently in testing stages and will be out as soon as all the bugs have been ironed out.

Motorola Smacks Down Apple iPhone 4 in New Droid X Ad

Motorola has joined Samsung to pour more salt on Apple’s iPhone 4 wounds. In a new Droid X ad which appeared today in the New York Times, Motorola laid the smack-down on both Apple and iPhone 4 by taking on the whole antennagate with its new slogan “No Jacket Required”.

At Motorola, we believe a customer shouldn’t have to dress up their phone for it to work properly. That’s why the DROID X comes with a dual antenna design. The kind that allows you to hold the phone any way you like to make crystal clear calls without a bulky phone jacket. For us it’s just one of those things that comes as a given when you’ve been making mobile phones for over 30 years.

This strong reaction of Motorola is most likely caused by one of the latest videos by Apple, which shows how the Droid X loses signals when gripped in a certain way.

WiiMote demonstration video with mame4iphone

By ZodTTD
Yesterday I did my daily scan of Twitter and noticed an interesting question sent to at me. The person, TehMillhouse, asked if I could support the BTstack project.
Don’t know what the hell a BTstack project is? It basically implements a whole lot more of the Bluetooth stack than previously allowed by Apple. This is no easy task, so I was surprised to see a video of the author of BTstack already showing it off on YouTube by controlling an application wirelessly…with a WiiMote!
The author of BTstack and I spoke and I ran out to buy a WiiMote today. Moments later I had success! I was playing mame4iphone on my iPhone 3gs with a WiiMote. No wires! Here’s what it looked like:

So needless to say, I really want to get a PS3 controller next and implement that. ;)
While I could use accelerometer data from the WiiMote, I chose to use button input. It fits emulators a lot better, and that is where the PS3 controller wins out. But using the WiiMote’s tiny dpad and oddly placed buttons is still much nicer than overlay touch controls. This should at least hold you over until the upcoming iControlPad release.
Once I refine this code a bit more, I will make some public releases of my work with WiiMote support included.
Thanks!

QuickPwn for Windows Iphone 3G

So you’re ready for the big move to 2.2 but just can’t figure it out? We’re here to help. In our opinion, QuickPwn has been the most effective tool with the fastest turnaround time so far (in the pwnage line) for windows users. Here are some prerequisites such as system requirements and the essential files that you need to complete the QuickPwn process.

Before you start your journey, however, I would like to stress one fact. The iPhone 3G has not yet been unlocked. The Pwnage process does not unlock iPhone 3G. When it does, we will definitely let you know. This guide was created using a 1st generation iPhone with the sole purpose to update it to 2.1 and keep it unlocked.
The iPhone 3G has been unlocked.  At the time of this writing, we are waiting on the iphone-dev team to release the unlock. Please keep in mind that this guide will work for both the iPhone 2G and 3G.

Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg Ditches iPhone for Android

If his recent Facebook activity has to be believed, than Facebook’s founder and CEO might have just ditched his iPhone for Android. It was only last month when Mark made the headlines for switching to iPhone (it was 3GS, not iPhone 4) from BlackBerry. But the experience wasn’t all that great as he posted about his frustrations with the device, citing poor battery life, and phone calling quality. He also said that he will get the new iPhone 4 and see if that solves all his problems before switching to Android.
Facebook Zuckerberg on iPhoneMark Zuckerberg Profile on Facebook, June 2010
And now according to his recent Facebook activity, it looks like he has finally gone for an Android phone.
Mark ZuckerbergMark Zuckerberg Profile on Facebook, July 2010
But given the amount of revenues that he generates from the most popular social networking site, I wouldn’t be surprised if he keeps both the iPhone 4 and an Android phone to fulfill all his needs.
Oh and now that Zuckerberg is using an Android phone, we may finally see an update forFacebook for Android app which badly needs to get updated to come on-par with the iPhone version.
