How to Patch & Install Cydia on iOS 4.2.1 After Redsn0w Jailbreak [Guide]

The recently released Redsn0w 0.9.6b3 can jailbreak all iOS based devices including the new A4 devices like iPhone 4, iPad and iPod touch 4G. Since Cydia included in this version of Redsn0w is not compatible with iOS 4.2.1, you can use the following steps to install a patched version of Cydia.
Step 1: First up, you will have to jailbreak your device using the newly released Redsn0w.
Step 2: Next, you will have to enable SSH by installing the compiled OpenSSH bundle using Redsn0w,
Step 3: Now simply download Cydia.patch file for iOS 4.2.1 from here and copy it to/Applications/Cydia.app/Cydia_ directory by SSH’ing into your iOS device. Windows users can use WinSCP while Mac users can use Cyberduck. Login instructions for SSH can be found below.
Cyberduck
  • Server: The IP address of your iPad. Settings –> WiFi –> <Your Network Name>
  • Username: root
  • Password: alpine
  • Protocol: SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol)
WinSCP
  • Hostname: The IP address of your iPad. Setting –> WiFi –> <Your Network Name>
  • User name: root
  • Password: alpine
  • Protocol: SCP
Enable Tethering on iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware [iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G]
Patch Cydia on iOS 4.2.1
Step 4: Now start Terminal app on Mac OS X and by using the original Cydia binary type the following commands in Terminal app on Mac OS X:
ssh root@<ip-address-ios-device>
Now login as root by entering “alpine” as password.
Once you have logged in:
apt-get update
apt-get install bsdiff
cd/Applications/Cydia.app/
cp Cydia_ Cydia.bak
bspatch Cydia.bak Cydia_ Cydia.patch
chmod +x+s Cydia_
Step 5: Now from here onwards, whenever you want to use Cydia or SSH into your device, you must first run your device in the so called “jailbroken state” on every reboot by using “Just boot tethered right now” option in Redsn0w.
Redsn0w (1)
NOTE: All iPhone unlockers must STAY AWAY from Redsn0w. Redsn0w 0.9.6b3 supports tethered jailbreak only.
That’s it! Enjoy Cydia on your jailbroken (semi-untethered) iOS 4.2.1 device !

Google Goggles Finally Arrives for iPhone 4, 3GS via Google Mobile App

Google today has finally brought the popular Android app named Google Goggles to the iPhone. Google Goggles was first introduced for Android platform in December last year.
Google Goggles on iPhone 4
For those of you who don’t know, Google Goggles lets you search the web using images without having to speak or write anything. You can simply take a picture with the camera on your phone, Goggles will then analyze and process your image, and then it will return a relevant search results page from Google. Currently, Goggles identifies landmarks, books, logos, business cards, places, wine bottles and works of art. Support for things like food, plants, and animals will be added in future releases.
Check out the video below to see how it works.
Google Goggles is available as of today for free as a feature of Google Mobile App for iPhone. It will work only with iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS.
Download Google Mobile App with Google Goggles [iTunes Link]
Make sure you check out our iPhone Apps Gallery and iPad Apps Gallery to explore more apps for your iPhone and iPad.

Redsn0w 0.9.6b1 : iOS 4.1/4.0 Jailbreak for iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G

Click the image to open in full size.

The Dev-Team has just released a fresh beta version of redsn0w, version 0.9.6b1, which allows users to jailbreak the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G on iOS 4.1 or 4.0.

The tool uses the same pwnage2 DFU-mode exploit that we’ve all been using with redsn0w since the 2.x days. There is nothing new for Apple to patch from this update, it's simply still compatible.

For those that are getting excited, settle down: this does not include the SHAtter exploit that has been on everyones mind lately.

Quote:
IF YOU USE THE ULTRASN0W UNLOCK, PLEASE WAIT FOR PWNAGETOOL TO SUPPORT 4.1. DO NOT USE REDSN0W. That’s because to use redsn0w at 4.1, you need to already have updated to official 4.1 from Apple. If you do that, you lose the ultrasn0w unlock (possible forever).
Currently redsn0w 0.9.6b1 is only available for Mac OSX, but a little birdie tells me that iH8sn0w may have the same thing up his sleeve for the same situation, but for Windows users.

Note: if you have an “MC” model of the ipt2g, your jailbreak will be tethered…sorry! (Consider rolling back to a FW supported by jailbreakme.com or spiritjb.com)

iOS 4.1 Jailbreak for iPhone 3GS (New Bootrom) with Sn0wbreeze 2.0 Releasing on Wednesday. Here is What You Need to Know

iH8sn0w’s Sn0wbreeze 2.0 will drop on Wednesday, 23rd September 2010. For those of you who don’t know, Sn0wbreeze for Windows works like PwnageTool for Mac which helps you in creating custom firmware files so that you can upgrade to new firmware without upgrading your baseband. This allows you to use the existing version of Ultrasn0w for unlocking the phone so that you can use it with any carrier you like.
Spirit2Pwn (2)
However it is to be noted that Sn0wbreeze 2.0 WILL NOT jailbreak iPhone 4, iPad and iPod touch 4G. The devices which it will support are:
  • iPhone 2G
  • iPhone 3G
  • iPhone 3GS (old bootrom) – Must be already jailbroken. (If you are jailbroken using Spirit or JailbreakMe, use Spirit2Pwn from http://repo.woowiz.net)
  • iPhone 3GS (new bootrom) – Must be currently jailbroken on 3.1.2.
  • iPod Touch 1G
  • iPod Touch 2G (Non-MC Model)
  • iPod Touch 2G (MC Model) – Must be currently jailbroken on 3.1.2.
  • iPod Touch 3G – Must be currently jailbroken on 3.1.2.
We will of course be back with complete How-to guides on jailbreaking iPhone and iPod touch using Sn0wbreeze 2.0 for Windows once it is out this Wednesday. Stay tuned!

Apple Reportedly Seeking Facial Recognition Technology

Click the image to open in full size.
There are reports that Apple may have purchased a Sweden-based tech firm that specializes in facial recognition technologies and similar applications that make it possible for gadgets and gizmos to identify users via their unique facial characteristics. If you're wondering if this could be the first step toward subsequent iPhones utilizing "facial recognition" as a security component, you are not alone.

With talk that next year's iPhone 5 will be all about speed and security (speed from AT&T's 4G network and a host of beefed up, cutting edge security features) it wouldn't be too difficult to imagine the powers-that-be in Cupertino investing heavily in the technology that this company - called "Polar Rose" (according to Google translation) - knows inside and out. Apple Insider reports that Polar Rose is a "small company with less than 20 employees." And its technology came as the result of research conducted in "two universities" in southern Sweden.

Although this report marks the first talk of its kind regarding the acquisition of a company that specializes in facial recognition, Apple has long been rumored to want similar technology in its full range of iDevices. Some will recall that prior to the iPad's release, there were reports from the likes of the Wall Street Journal that Apple's then-mythical tablet would be a device that would be shared by multiple family members -- "and it might even recognize their faces."

From reports to patent applications, there's no doubt that Apple is interested in facial recognition technology. And if Polar Rose doesn't prove the vehicle to delver the technology, it's a safe bet that Apple will find another way - or another source - to get or create what the company seems to have an unrelenting fascination with.
